Statement from President & CEO Jason Jakubowski on the tragic death of Volunteer Services Manager Delores Tracey John.

Wallingford, CT

“Heartbroken and devastated don’t even begin to describe what we’re feeling today. Delores was more than just our co-worker, she was our friend. It’s going to take us all a while to wrap our heads around this… but for now, our family simply prays for Delores and hers.”

Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare Officially Unite

Statewide food bank expected to distribute 40 million meals per year.

Bloomfield, CT and Wallingford, CT

The boards of directors of both Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank voted this morning to approve a historic union between the state’s two largest nonprofit anti-hunger organizations. The transaction will be effective Saturday, January 30, 2021.

“Today is a historic day for the state of Connecticut,” said Wes Higgins, a past Connecticut Food Bank board chair who will chair the board of the new entity. “Now we will be able to address hunger with a united voice, a fully coordinated distribution model, and an integrated set of programs made available across the entire state.” With a combined annual budget of approximately $110 million, the new organization will be home to 115 employees and more than 8,000 annual volunteers. It will be led by current Foodshare President and Chief Executive Officer Jason Jakubowski.

“With Jason’s strong leadership and the support of the community, we know this combined team will be successful,” said Foodshare board chair Beth Henry, who will be vice chair of the new entity. “With the integration of our operations we can pool resources to better serve Connecticut residents who struggle with food insecurity. We can also utilize our combined donations to provide more efficient programs, better support our member agencies, assist seniors and children in need, and collaborate with the broader community to build effective solutions to end hunger.”

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this expanded role in the place I’ve called home my entire life,” said Jakubowski, a New Britain native and West Hartford resident who holds degrees from the University of Connecticut. “We have a tremendous team of staff and volunteers – and for many of us, this will be both the greatest honor and the greatest challenge of our careers.”

The new organization will be governed by a 23-member board of directors comprised of a mix of members of the outgoing Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank boards. The food banks will continue to operate out of their Wallingford, Bloomfield, and Bridgeport facilities and will continue to use their existing trade names until a new name is chosen in the coming weeks.

The unification process was facilitated by Debra Hertz, the principal of The Strategy Group, a nonprofit advisory firm in Darien. Foodshare was represented by Halloran & Sage in Hartford, and Connecticut Food Bank was represented by Wiggin & Dana in New Haven. Both food banks are members of Feeding America - the leading national anti-hunger organization.

“I commend the leadership at Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank for their strategic decision to unite these two great organizations,” said Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, Chief Executive Officer at Feeding America. “By merging their operations and their service areas, these food banks will be able to more effectively serve people across Connecticut and make a stronger impact on hunger statewide.”

Food Banks Add New Emergency Drive-Thru Distributions Across Connecticut

Three additional sites to replicate Rentschler Field model.

Bloomfield, CT and Wallingford, CT

A month after announcing that Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare are in discussions to merge as one statewide organization, the two food banks announced the launch of three new food distributions in New London, Norwich and Norwalk replicating Foodshare’s emergency drive-thru food distribution at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

“Hunger doesn’t care where you live,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare. “And hunger is not contained to any one region here in Connecticut. By launching these additional drive-thru, COVID-conscious sites we are continuing to bring hope to the many Connecticut families affected by this pandemic.”

Just this past Monday, Foodshare announced a new winter schedule for its East Hartford site starting on Tuesday, January 12. Connecticut Food Bank will set up drive-thru food distributions starting Friday, January 8, in New London at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church; Wednesday, January 13, in Norwalk at Calf Pasture Beach; and Monday, January 25, in the parking lot at 28 Stonington Road, across from Pistol Pete’s Bar And Grill, in Norwich. These sites will run weekly throughout the winter months with an end date to be determined.

“These weekly emergency food distributions in New London, Norwalk, and Norwich are a result of the combined resources and expertise made possible by this expected combination of the two food banks,” said Connecticut Food Bank Board member Wes Higgins. “These new sites will go a long way to increase access to food for people in Connecticut struggling with hunger due to the pandemic.”

“Since April, we have distributed more than 7 million pounds of food at Rentschler Field,” said Foodshare Board Chair Elizabeth Henry. “By expanding that model to other corners of the state, we are already demonstrating the expected benefits of a potential merger.”

Foodshare’s food distribution at Rentschler Field will start back up again on Tuesday, January 12.

Bloomfield, CT

Foodshare has been distributing food at Rentschler Field in East Hartford since the start of the pandemic. This distribution site alone has served over 225,000 households; many new to food insecurity due to COVID-19 and has distributed over 6 million meals.

“We successfully served hundreds of thousands of people with the Rentschler Field distribution during the spring, summer and fall, but winter weather in New England is always an incredible challenge. Our team worked tirelessly throughout the holidays to find a way to keep this distribution site going through the winter, and we are happy to report our efforts were successful. Thanks to the continued support of Governor Lamont and the State of Connecticut, and thanks to a generous discount from our friends at Euphoria Event Solutions in Windsor, we will be able to continue our Rentschler Field distribution through the winter months,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare.

Foodshare is encouraging people to connect with additional food resources in their community, including Foodshare’s network of over 200 partner pantries and meal programs in Greater Hartford. Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare in Talks to Merge

The organizations are exploring ways to more effectively serve Connecticut.

Bloomfield, CT & Wallingford, CT

Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare today announced that the boards of both food banks are in discussions to merge as one statewide organization to more effectively serve people in Connecticut who struggle with food insecurity.

Foodshare Board chair Beth Henry and Connecticut Food Bank past Board chair Wes Higgins have led the process for the two organizations and released a statement today regarding the progress of the talks. “We have been engaged in a deliberate and thoughtful process to determine how we can achieve our united mission with our experienced and dedicated staff, our partner agencies, our volunteers, and our donors. We look forward to providing an update early in 2021.”

Mr. Higgins added that the two organizations have a history of collaborative work that made the discussions a logical next step. “We have worked together in the past on issues of advocacy, policy, and service delivery. This is a natural evolution of that partnership.” Ms. Henry said that Foodshare and Connecticut Food Bank “have cooperated on logistics, including food distribution and statewide fundraising, most recently during the coronavirus pandemic. This conversation is happening because we work well together and we believe strongly we can do even more as a combined team.”

As part of the discussions, a framework for a combined organization is in development. Ms. Henry and Mr. Higgins said that the new Board of Directors will be comprised of members of both existing boards and that Foodshare President & CEO Jason Jakubowski, who has displayed strong leadership in his role as CEO for the past three years would be named President & CEO of the new organization. The new organization will have a new name that will “reflect its statewide nature,” said Ms. Henry. “For the first time in history, Connecticut will have one dynamic statewide network of 700-plus partner agencies including pantries, meal programs, mobile distribution sites, and more.”

Mr. Higgins said that the new organization would continue operations in Bloomfield and Wallingford and that there are no immediate plans to make reductions in staff. “The Board of Directors of the new organization will continually evaluate operations and make subsequent decisions based on what will allow us to effectively distribute high-quality, nutritious food to the most Connecticut residents.”

Foodshare Partners with Bank of America To Help Feed Greater Hartford Residents

Bloomfield, CT

With so many families home from work, schools going remote, and rising unemployment rates, there has been an unprecedented increase in food insecurity throughout our communities. As the demand for food increases daily, Foodshare is experiencing a strain on resources. By joining forces with Bank of America, Foodshare can continue its mission to help alleviate hunger in the Greater Hartford region. The bank’s donation will allow Foodshare to continue providing food to thousands of families throughout Hartford and Tolland counties who are now food insecure because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The key players throughout this crisis have been Foodshare’s community members, the donors and volunteers who continue to step up to help fill the need. With help from community partners, Foodshare can actively adjust its operations in response to this state of emergency and as new expenses are incurred daily. The aid from Bank of America will help provide over 100,000 meals to people who are desperately in need right now.

“We’re so grateful for the decades-long partnership between Foodshare and Bank of America, and their continued commitment to addressing hunger in Greater Hartford. This gift will help us continue to respond to the incredible need during the COVID-19 crisis,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare.

Recent survey results conducted by Foodshare at their emergency drive-thru food distributions at Rentschler Field and The Hartford Regional Market show that over 70% of households attending these distributions have lost their jobs or had their hours cut due to the coronavirus. During the past month, nearly 7 out of 10 people had to choose between paying for food and paying other bills. For many people coming to the new drive-thru food distribution, this is their first time receiving assistance from Foodshare.

“No family should have to choose between paying for food or paying their bills,” said Joe Gianni, Hartford Market President for Bank of America. “Committing our resources to local communities and addressing the immediate needs of our neighbors during this time is priority for Bank of America, along with supporting our clients and employees. Thank you, Foodshare, for making sure every family can have food on their table.”

As the lines continue to grow, on average Foodshare provides food to approximately 1200 households per day.

Bloomfield, CT

Now in its third week distributing food to the community through a drive-thru distribution model, Foodshare has decided to extend its operation at Rentschler Field in East Hartford until the end of May. As the lines continue to grow, on average Foodshare provides food to approximately 1200 households per day.

“With no decline in attendance, we have made the decision to keep our emergency food distribution running through the month of May,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare. “The financial support from our corporate and community partners plus an incredible group of volunteers is what is allowing us to continue this work. We also remain grateful to Governor Lamont, Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz and the Capital Region Development Authority for allowing us to continue to use Rentschler Field.”

Based on a recent survey, Foodshare estimates that approximately 70% of those served at the drive-thru food distribution are new to food insecurity. Jakubowski said “Our goal is to keep this operation running throughout the duration of this crisis.”

Important information to share with the community:
Distribution dates: WEEKDAYS Monday, May 11 through Friday, May 29; 8:30 am – 12:00 pm; CLOSED on Memorial Day, May 25.
Address: 615 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT 06118 – Silver Lane entrance; gates will close at Noon
One allocation of food per car per day to ensure that we have enough food for everyone.

This emergency food distribution at Rentschler Field is in addition to Foodshare’s ongoing efforts to provide food to a network of over 200 pantries, community kitchens, and Mobile Foodshare sites throughout the region.

Community members unable to drive to East Hartford can access help through the following:

Foodshare Extends Drive-thru Food Distribution at Rentschler Field

Due to the overwhelming response from the community, Foodshare will continue its drive-thru food distribution on weekdays at Rentschler field for the next two weeks.

Bloomfield, CT

“Since the start of our distribution this past Monday we have served an average of nearly 1000 cars per day,” said Jason Jakubowski, President and CEO of Foodshare. “We have seen first-hand that our neighbors need our help, and for that reason we have made the decision to extend this food distribution so that no one in our community goes hungry.”

Jakubowski said Foodshare will reassess the program in two weeks to determine if another extension is needed. “Our decisions are driven first and foremost by need; and assuming the need continues to exist, we will run this program as long as we have enough food and volunteers, and as long as the state will have us at Rentschler.”

Governor Ned Lamont and Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz were both at Rentschler Field on Monday distributing food to families in need.

Important information to share with the community:
Distribution dates: Monday, April 27 through Friday, May 1; Monday, May 4 through Friday, May 8
Address: 615 Silver Lane, East Hartford, CT 06118 – Silver Lane entrance; gates will close at Noon

Update on Foodshare's COVID-19 Response From Our President & CEO

We could not serve our community without your help.

Bloomfield, CT

I am writing to update you on how Foodshare and our partner programs continue to meet the needs of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

First and foremost, these past few weeks have shown the inspiring generosity and compassion of our food industry partners, our corporate partners and our community as a whole. In particular, I’d like to thank all of our staff and the amazing people who have signed up to volunteer their time. YOU are truly heroes and we could not serve our community without your help. In addition:

  • Over the past four weeks, we have spent over $225,000 on purchased food... which is almost as much as we spent in all of last year alone. This is a major financial burden; but one that is necessary to meet to fill the gap left by a nationwide decrease in food donations.
  • We have distributed more than 90,000 pounds of produce at special distributions sites in Hartford and New Britain over the past few weeks. Beginning Monday, we will host a weeklong drive-thru food distribution at Rentschler Field for our Greater Hartford neighbors.
  • We asked our supporters for donations of homemade face masks to maintain CDC guidelines and support the health of our staff and network - and in one week we had more than 600 masks donated! Our food industry partners continue to support our increased need to the best of their ability by providing necessary funding and continued delivery of food.
  • Our corporate and philanthropic partners have shown their support and we thank them for acknowledging the important need for continued funding in both the future and the long-term. In particular, we thank the Dalio Foundation, 4-CT, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Bank of America and Stop & Shop for their extremely generous donations.
  • Our Mobile Foodshare program continues to operate, with only a few sites cancelled. For the safety of our community our sites are now following a pre-bagged grab and go model. To find a site near you text FOODSHARE to 85511.

Finally, as things evolve hour-to-hour and day-by-day, our top priority continues to be the safety and well-being of our staff, our volunteers, and of course the clients we serve. To that end, we continue to follow CDC guidelines by enforcing social distancing and requiring Foodshare personnel wear masks when working in our facility or out at one of our distribution sites.

These truly are unprecedented times, but please know that this crisis has brought us together. Foodshare remains committed to our community, and we will continue to fight through the financial and emotional strain because the need right now is REAL and it’s affecting all of our family and friends.

We will keep you posted on our response to this crisis as it unfolds and as we learn more. For up-to-date information please visit our website: www.foodshare.org/coronavirus.

Be well and be safe,

Jason Jakubowski

Foodshare Receives $500,000 Gift from the Dalio Philanthropies

Bloomfield, CT

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Foodshare has received a very generous donation from Barbara and Ray Dalio and Dalio Philanthropies to help aid in the purchase and distribution of food during this crisis.

“Foodshare is doing amazing work on the ground to make sure Connecticut families in need have food during this crisis,” said Barbara Dalio. “We hope others join in support of this important cause.”

Foodshare serves more than 118,000 people in Hartford and Tolland counties who are food insecure, distributing more than 11 Million meals each year through a network of 280 partner food pantries, meal programs and their Mobile Foodshare program. Mobile Foodshare is an outdoor pantry-on-wheels that delivers produce, dairy, meat and other food items to communities throughout more than 60 partner sites, including community and senior centers, public housing complexes, houses of worship and more, in Greater Hartford.

“I can’t thank Barbara and Ray enough for this amazing gift,” said Foodshare President & CEO Jason Jakubowski. “Their generosity – particularly during this time of unprecedented need – is what will keep us going over the next several weeks as we do our best to provide for our community.”

A Message From Foodshare's President On COVID-19

Foodshare's top priority is the safety and well-being of our volunteers and staff, our partner programs, and of course the community we serve.

Bloomfield, CT

Dear Friends:

I am writing to update you on Foodshare’s plan as it relates to the coronavirus (COVID-19). This pandemic is evolving by the hour, and I want to affirm that our top priority is the safety and well-being of our volunteers and staff, our partner programs, and of course the community we serve.

First and foremost: please take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Our personal lives, our professional lives and our world in general are stressful enough without a global health crisis, so we completely understand that this can all be quite a bit to handle at such a rapid pace. The work we all do is certainly important (especially at times like this), but we can't do our collective work if we aren't taking care of our own health.

While none of us know exactly what will occur over the next few weeks, we did want to share the following information with you:

  • Foodshare is already seeing a dramatic decrease in our volunteers due to many businesses canceling outside activities. We ask that if any high school or college students are available to volunteer over their extended break and are symptom free, please consider signing up to volunteer at www.foodshare.org/volunteer.
  • Our Hunger Action Team Symposium originally scheduled for April 2nd has been cancelled.
  • Our Walk Against Hunger (our single largest fundraiser of the year) is thankfully a very long 58 days away and is still proceeding as normal.
  • No person who has been to countries on the CDC watch list within the last 30 days will be allowed into any of our facilities until further notice. Please see: wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices.
  • There is an increasing likelihood that public school districts in our service area will close in the weeks ahead. If/when that happens, we can expect increased demand at our pantries and longer lines at our Mobile Foodshare sites.

These are uneasy times for all of us and for those we serve. The one thing that we do know, though, is that our community always comes together to support our neighbors in need... and this time will be no different. While we expect to experience significant financial and emotional strain in the weeks ahead, our commitment to those we serve remains strong.

We will continue to keep you posted as this crisis unfolds and as we learn more. For up-to-date information please visit our website: www.foodshare.org/coronavirus.

Gratefully,

Jason Jakubowski

Foodshare Strongly Opposes Final USDA Rule Slashing SNAP Benefits for Nearly 700,000 People

Statement attributed to Jason Jakubowski, President & CEO

Bloomfield, CT

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a proven anti-hunger program that provides millions of people struggling with hunger critical food assistance, including thousands across Greater Hartford. Just in time for the holidays, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released a harmful final rule that will cut SNAP benefits for nearly 700,000 unemployed and underemployed people, leaving far too many of the individuals Foodshare and other emergency food providers serve unsure of how they will access healthy, nutritious food when the new year begins.

When people need help, they turn to the charitable sector to help put food on the table. While Foodshare and the rest of Feeding America’s 200-member hunger-relief network will always be on the frontline to ensure no one goes hungry, we alone cannot meet the uptick in need that will result from an immense loss in SNAP benefits. By the USDA’s own estimates, the rule will cut SNAP annually by $1.1 billion, swiping 625 million meals from food insecure households every year (or more than 6.2 billion meals over the next decade). Foodshare and other emergency food providers will face undue pressure to help fill in where the federal government falls short.

As Foodshare continues to deliver on its promise to provide nutritious food to individuals in need in Hartford and Tolland counties, we strongly urge the USDA to consider the harm of the final rule and invest in policies that eliminate hunger in Greater Hartford and elsewhere in the nation.

Rule Background

Under current law, SNAP eligibility is already severely limited: the program imposes a strict time limit on able-bodied beneficiaries ages 18 to 50 and not caring for children (called Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents, or ABAWDs), capping their access to essential food assistance to three months every three years, unless they are working no less than 20 hours a week or participating in a comparable workforce program or training.

Right now, states have the option to waive the time limits to accommodate the reality that employment opportunities are limited in many pockets of the country. The waivers, which have been requested by nearly every state, help to ensure that individuals facing barriers to adequate employment — lack of transportation, irregular work schedules — are able to eat. However, the USDA’s final rule will dramatically limit states’ ability to waive the time limits, effectively increasing hunger and hardship for many of our neighbors who are food insecure and are looking to work while facing volatile labor market conditions.

Foodshare’s Turkey and Thirty Campaign Aims to Help 15,059 Families this Thanksgiving

Bloomfield, CT

Foodshare is officially announcing that this holiday season 15,059 families in Greater Hartford are in need of a turkey. Foodshare distributes Thanksgiving meals through our partner program network, which includes over 200 local food pantries and meal programs. Each turkey in the goal represents a request from an individual who has been identified as being someone in need by a Foodshare partner program.

In addition to the turkey goal, Foodshare is announcing a monetary goal of $451,770. As part of the Turkey and Thirty campaign, the request to community supporters this season is to donate thirty dollars along with a turkey. This money will support Foodshare’s efforts to fight hunger throughout the year, because hunger is a year-round issue. In Hartford and Tolland counties, 118,000 people struggle with hunger including 33,000 children.

“These are large numbers, but I have seen firsthand the generosity of the Greater Hartford community. I know with their help we will ensure that all 15,059 of the local families in need will have food on their Thanksgiving table, and the funds donated this holiday season will help to support our work throughout the year.” said Jason Jakubowski, President & CEO of Foodshare.

Foodshare will be accepting Turkey and Thirty donations all month long. To guarantee that turkeys reach the table by Thanksgiving, please drop off your donation by November 26 to Foodshare or at one of our community donation drives in your area.

For a complete list of community donation drives, or to make your gift online, please visit www.foodshare.org.

Remembering Gloria McAdam

Foodshare's President & CEO, 1984 - 2014

Bloomfield, CT

It is with great sorrow that we share the passing of our friend and former CEO, Gloria McAdam. For more than 30 years, Gloria McAdam was Foodshare. Her passion for both our cause and the people we served knew no bounds - and were it not for her steadfast vision, we wouldn’t be the organization we are today.

Gloria retired from Foodshare in 2014 in order to take the helm of GardenShare, an organization that fights hunger in the Canton, NY area where she grew up. At the time of her departure she was quoted as saying: "While I leave Foodshare with a great deal of sadness, I know the team we've built shares my passion for fighting hunger and ending its causes and will be terrific stewards of this mission. I am grateful for the community, volunteers, and staff support that has helped us grow Foodshare from a tiny, grass-roots organization to one that is currently building our capacity to both feed hungry people and engage in programs to end hunger in the region. I am so proud of the work, the staff and the dedicated volunteers who work every day to end hunger. They will always be part of my family."

Gloria will always be a part of our family and we will honor her legacy each and every day by providing food to people in need and addressing the root causes of hunger in the communities we have the privilege to serve.
