Every Hour Makes a Difference

Volunteering at Foodshare is easy and it makes an incredible difference – whether you join us once or on a regular basis!

Foodshare is fortunate to have a number of regular volunteers who continue to come back each week to help make a difference in our community. This includes 10 individuals who volunteer at Foodshare in Bloomfield every Wednesday afternoon to inspect and sort food that is donated by local grocery stores. This group of individuals gave over 1,000 hours of service to Foodshare last year – ensuring that we are able to safely and efficiently connect our partner programs with good food that would have otherwise gone to waste.

Thank you to our Wednesday afternoon crew at Bloomfield for your ongoing dedication - Carmen Boudier, Carole Carlson, Verona Cascio, Tom Eysmans, Ned Felske, Denton Hopper, David Pinney, Drew Smith, Peter Grandy and Louisa Cummings - and to all of our volunteers for your continued support!

Walking to a Brighter Future

Volunteering at Foodshare is a great way to connect with our community and raise awareness!

Every May, Foodshare relies on the support of over 100 volunteers who help at the Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger. As the largest anti-hunger fundraising event in the region, the Walk Against Hunger is a time when our community comes together to raise much-needed support and awareness for Foodshare and our community partners. Last year, the Foodshare Walk Against Hunger raised $529,717 to fight hunger in Hartford and Tolland counties! Volunteers helped make this success possible in so many different ways – from setting up tables, checking in walkers, helping with clean up, and more!

Aetna Fills Foodshare with Volunteers

Volunteering at Foodshare can be a great team-building experience!

This past summer, 170 Aetna interns from across the country spent an entire day at Foodshare to sort food to help our neighbors in need and learn more about hunger in our community. The interns volunteered at both Foodshare locations – including our main warehouse in Bloomfield and our produce facility at the Hartford Regional Market – and rotated through different stations: sorting donations of meat, grocery items and produce, and preparing mesh bags that Foodshare uses to efficiently pack produce. Interns also participated in Foodshare’s Hunger 101 role-play and discussion activity to learn more about the realities of hunger.

Altogether, this energetic group from Aetna sorted enough food to provide close to 24,000 meals!

A big thank you to the volunteers and staff members from Aetna for taking time to give back to the Greater Hartford community!
