Progress Towards Our Goal

Over 3,000 families still waiting and hoping for help this Thanksgiving

Bloomfield, CT

As of today, Foodshare has received enough turkeys to provide Thanksgiving dinner to 11,789 Greater Hartford households. But that still leaves 3,545 families still in need of help this holiday season.

Six community drives were held today throughout Greater Hartford and our Bloomfield warehouse was open until 4 pm to collect turkeys and monetary donations. Our distribution area was busy throughout the morning loading up trucks full of turkeys and produce for our partner pantries and meal programs, who then distribute the food to our families in need.

George Souliotis has been volunteering with Foodshare for the past five years. He signed up to help with turkey collection because he feels that “it’s very gratifying and it is a great way to give back…volunteering at Foodshare restores my faith in humanity because the entire community comes together so we can all share in the bounty.”

“We absolutely couldn’t do what we do without our amazing army of volunteers…and its not just at Thanksgiving, it’s year-round. We have over 4,700 wonderful people helping us carry out our mission throughout the year,” said Jason Jakubowski, president & CEO, Foodshare.

Foodshare’s annual Turkey and Thirty Campaign features donation sites and special events right through November 21. For a complete list of locations, or to donate online, please visit ATurkeyand30.org. You can also call 860-856-HELP to donate by phone or text CTFOODSHARE to 41444.

About Foodshare

Foodshare is leading an informed, coordinated response to hunger in our community. Foodshare is the Feeding America food bank serving Connecticut’s Hartford and Tolland Counties, where 127,000 people struggle with hunger. In partnership with the food industry, donors, community leaders and volunteers, Foodshare works to maximize access to nutritious food and other resources that support food security. Last year, Foodshare distributed 11.5 million meals worth of food to a network of 300 local partner programs including food pantries, shelters, and community kitchens. And, because hunger is bigger than food, Foodshare collaborates with anti-hunger organizations, policy makers, and the broader community to build effective solutions to end hunger.

Foodshare is changing what it means to be a food bank. For more information, visit www.foodshare.org, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.
